Every believer is a carrier of grace, but God expects us to actively increase and grow in His grace and favour through service, knowledge, and a perfect heart.
1. The Scriptural Basis: Levels and Growth in Grace
Grace is the unmerited, undeserved favour of God given to every believer according to the measure of Christ (Ephesians 4:7). Just as Jesus increased in wisdom, stature, and in favour with God and man (Luke 2:52), we are commanded to grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18).
“Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord.” — 2 Peter 1:2
Scripture reveals multiple dimensions of grace:
- More Grace: God resists the proud but gives more grace to the humble, lifting them up (James 4:6, 10).
- Great Grace: Accompanies great power and bold witness of the gospel (Acts 4:33).
- Manifold Grace: The variegated, multi-coloured manifestations of God’s grace that believers must steward (1 Peter 4:10).
- All Grace: God making every earthly blessing come in abundance so we possess all sufficiency (2 Corinthians 9:8).
2. Service and Liberality: The Catalysts for Grace Multiplication
Grace is not given to be kept; it is a divine enablement to serve God and mankind (Hebrews 12:28, Ephesians 3:7). Apostle Paul laboured more abundantly than all others, yet recognized it was by the grace of God upon him (1 Corinthians 15:9–10). In the parable of the talents, the master commanded his servants to occupy until he came; the faithful servants traded with their talents to bring profit to the kingdom, receiving more talents and authority over cities (Luke 19:11–26). Furthermore, liberality and cheerful giving cause God to make all grace abound toward us (2 Corinthians 9:6–8). Ministering substance to the servants of God aligns us to receive a prophet’s reward and partake of the grace they carry (Matthew 10:41, Galatians 6:6–7).
3. The State of the Heart: Qualification for Kingdom Promotion
Increasing in grace and securing divine favour requires a perfect, loyal, and undivided heart before God (2 Chronicles 16:9). Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matthew 6:21). Man looks at the outward appearance, but God searches the heart; He rejected Eliab and chose David, a seventeen year old shepherd boy, because He found in him a man after His own heart who would fulfill all His will (1 Samuel 16:1–13, Acts 13:21–22).
4. The Potter’s House: Restoration and Shaping by Grace
We are the clay and God is our Potter (Isaiah 64:8). When a vessel is marred or distorted in the potter’s hand, He breaks it down and reshapes it according to His original intention (Jeremiah 18:1–6). Grace acts as a maker, healer, and deliverer, resetting broken lives and restoring alignment to God’s divine purpose.
Call to Action
- Engage in Kingdom Service: Identify a unit or department in the church and actively deploy your talents, gifts, and time to advance God’s work.
- Practice Cheerful Giving: Maintain consistent tithing, liberal giving, and sow into the lives of God’s servants to unlock the dimension of all grace.
- Guard Your Heart: Purify your motives, keep your heart loyal to God, and make Him your highest treasure above all material blessings.
Questions for Meditation and Pondering
- Am I actively trading with the talents and grace God has entrusted to me, or am I burying them through fear, passivity, or excuses?
- Is my heart truly set on seeking the Lord, or do I only seek Him for material blessings and abandon Him once my needs are met?
- In what areas of my life do I need to yield myself as clay to the Potter so He can reshape me into a vessel fit for His glory?
